drive 150x150 L.A. Funeral Home Provides Drive Thru ServiceAccording to a story this week in the L.A. Times, a Compton funeral home is providing mourners with the 21st century convenience of a drive-thru viewing of the deceased.

The Robert L. Adams Mortuary is one of only a handful of drive-thru funeral parlors in the U.S., and the only one in southern California.  The open casket is propped up in a long glass display window, and mourners pay their respects as they motor through the 12-foot wide drive-thru on the side of the building.

Scott Adams, the widow of the funeral home’s owner, said that the drive-thru concept was initially popular in the 1980s when gang shootings in cemeteries made mourners reluctant to attend ceremonies.  The display window’s glass is bullet-proof.

However, Adams said that now the drive-thru service is a convenience for the elderly who may be too infirm to come inside, and the busy, who apparently find it more convenient to drive by to pay their respects.
