A recent study commissioned by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health has found that there’s a big gap between the perception of retirement by pre-retirees and the realities of what those already retired are experiencing:

Slide04 e1318013180294 Study Finds Vast Difference in Expectations and Reality When It Comes to RetirementResearchers report that 35 percent of current retirees surveyed say that their financial situation has worsened, yet just 22 percent of pre-retirees predict the same will happen to them.  On the healthcare front, 39 percent of retirees reported that their health has declined in retirement, yet only 13 percent of pre-retirees believe they will suffer the same fate.

The study points up the inclination of people to be unrealistic when it comes to planning for the future.  Current research shows that more than 65 percent of Americans are not saving enough for retirement.  In addition, more than 68 percent of American adults are either overweight or obese, which are major contributors to health problems.

If you are ready to remove the rose-colored glasses and plan for your financial future, your first step should be to consult with an Orange County estate planning attorney.
