duchess of alba 150x150 The Money or the Man? Duchess of Alba Gives Up Wealth for LoveThe 85-year-old Duchess of Alba, one of Spain’s richest women with an estate estimated between $850 million and $5 billion, is giving her fortune to her six children in order to marry a man 24 years her junior.

The twice-widowed Duchess wants to marry Alfonso Diez, a 61-year-old civil servant whom her family claims is only after her money.  To prove them wrong, she is giving her children and grandchildren an early inheritance, reportedly saying, “Alfonso doesn’t want anything.  All he wants is me.”

The Duchess – who is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most titled individual, having been named a duchess seven times, a countess 22 times and a marquesa 24 times – is the titular head of the House of Alba, which descends from King James VII of Scotland.  Each of her six children and eight grandchildren are reportedly receiving a castle apiece, as well as their own chunk of her extensive real estate holdings throughout Spain.

Much of the Duchess’ personal wealth is tied up in valuable works of art, including original paintings by Goya, Titian, Velazquez and other masters.  Her other holdings include Columbus’ first map of America, a first edition of Don Quixote, and the last will and testament of Fernando the Catholic, the father of Catherine of Aragon.
